1. An Old Coal Chute or Fuel Hatch

Before the widespread adoption of electrical heating, natural gas, or oil, the vast majority of homes relied entirely on coal furnaces to stay warm during the winter.

  • How it worked: Delivery wagons would pull up alongside the house or into the back alleyway. The delivery worker would hook a tool through the iron rings to lift the heavy concrete or iron slab, exposing a vertical chute that led straight down into the basement.
  • The Process: Shovels or metal slides were used to dump tons of coal directly into the home’s subterranean storage bunker without needing to carry dirty, dusty bags through the main living quarters. Once finished, the heavy cap was dropped back into place, keeping rain, snow, and pests out.
