5 Places You Should Never Put Your Microwave in the Kitchen!
1. Directly Above the Stove
It is a common design choice, but it’s often a bad idea.
- The Problem: The heat from your stovetop can overheat the microwave’s external casing, damaging sensitive electronic components. Furthermore, the steam and grease rising from pots can clog the microwave’s vent filters, forcing the motor to work harder and wear out faster.
- The Fix: If you must have it there, ensure you have a high-quality range hood or a microwave with a powerful, integrated ventilation system that is properly maintained.
2. Inside a Tight Cabinet
Microwaves need to “breathe.” They have cooling fans that circulate air to prevent the internal electronics from overheating.
- The Problem: Placing a microwave in a cramped cabinet restricts airflow. If the hot air can’t escape, the internal components will degrade rapidly, and in extreme cases, it creates a potential fire hazard.
- The Fix: Always leave at least 2–3 inches of clearance on the top, back, and sides of the unit for proper ventilation.
