My husband said the storage unit was empty — he had been paying for it every month for fourteen years.

Eighty-seven dollars.

I found it on a statement in the March, about eight weeks before our fifteenth anniversary, and only because I was looking for something else entirely.

And then I went back through the folder and it was there the month before, and the month before that, and in 2019, and in 2015.

One evening I mentioned it.

He did not look up from his phone.

“It’s an old storage unit.”

“A storage unit?”

“Yeah. It’s empty. I keep meaning to cancel it.”

That was the whole conversation. Eleven words from a man who has been married to me since 2011, delivered in the tone you use about a direct debit for a magazine.

The next month it went out again.

I said: I thought you were cancelling that.

He said: “I forgot.”

And that was the end of that one too.
