Age gaps in relationships often raise questions, particularly among Christians wondering whether Scripture places limits on the difference in age between a husband and wife.

The straightforward answer is that the Bible gives no specific rule about an acceptable age gap between two adults who marry. Instead, biblical teaching about relationships focuses much more heavily on faithfulness, character, wisdom, love and responsibility.

Abraham and Sarah are one biblical couple whose ages are explicitly given. In Genesis 17:17, Abraham is described as 100 years old and Sarah as 90 when God promises that they will have a son.w

That establishes an age difference of approximately ten years. Scripture mentions their ages because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Isaac’s birth, not because it is teaching about age-gap relationships.

Still, their marriage is never criticized because Abraham was older than Sarah. The age difference itself simply isn’t presented as a moral problem.

What About Mary and Joseph?

Mary and Joseph are frequently mentioned in discussions about age differences, sometimes with claims that Joseph was considerably older than Mary.

The Bible, however, does not tell us their ages.

Later traditions and historical speculation have produced different ideas about Joseph’s age, but these should not be presented as biblical facts. The Gospel accounts instead emphasize Joseph’s righteousness, his treatment of Mary, and his obedience to God.
