Most People Can’t Spot The Difference Between These, But It’s Really Important

Have you ever stood in the spice aisle, grabbed your usual tin of McCormick Pure Ground Black Pepper, and headed to the checkout without a second thought? If so, you might want to look a little closer next time.

Take a look at the image below. At a quick glance, they look identical. But there is a hidden retail trick happening right before your eyes, and it’s costing you money.

The Sneaky Tale of Two Tins

Look closely at the very bottom of the two tins:

  • The tin on the left: It’s physically larger, but the net weight reads 1.5 oz (42 g).
  • The tin on the right: It’s physically smaller, but the net weight reads 2 oz (56 g).

Wait… what? How is the larger container holding less pepper than the smaller one?

What you are looking at is a classic, textbook example of “Shrinkflation”—and a legal battle that changed how grocery manufacturers can package their products.
