Most People Can’t Spot The Difference Between These, But It’s Really Important
1. Your Wallet Takes a Hit
When a company reduces the product size but keeps the price and the packaging the same, you are effectively paying more for less. It’s inflation in disguise. If you don’t check the unit prices ($ per ounce) at the grocery store, you can easily end up overpaying.
2. Recipe Precision
If a recipe calls for a “standard 2 oz tin of black pepper” (common in large-batch cooking, pickling, or spice rubs) and you blindly dump in the new 1.5 oz tin assuming it’s the same as it always was, your ratios will be completely thrown off.
How to Protect Yourself from Shrinkflation
You don’t have to be a victim of sneaky packaging. Here is how you can shop smarter:
- Ignore the Box Size: Opaque packaging, thick rims, and false bottoms are designed to trick your eyes. Always look directly at the net weight at the bottom of the label.
- Check the Unit Price: Look at the grocery shelf tag. It will tell you exactly how much the product costs per ounce or per 100 grams. Compare this number across different brands.
- Buy Whole Peppercorns: Want the ultimate hack? Buy whole black peppercorns in bulk and grind them yourself. Not only is it vastly cheaper per ounce, but the flavor is exponentially better than pre-ground pepper that has been sitting in a tin full of air!
