A Dairy Queen Restaurant Is in the Middle of a Huge Controversy Over This Sign—And the Owner Refuses to Move It
The Owner’s Final Stance: No Apologies
Despite corporate pressure and online outrage, Scheunemann has remained entirely unapologetic. He has flatly refused to take the sign down or walk back his messaging.
In fact, he noted that the internet outrage actually had the exact opposite effect intended by critics. Instead of hurting his business, the controversy turned his small-town Dairy Queen into a literal tourist landmark. People began driving for hours just to take a photo with the infamous front door and buy a Blizzard to show their support.
Local residents and fellow small business owners also stepped up to defend him, pointing out that because the sign is posted on the outside of the building, consumers have total freedom of choice. As one local bar owner put it: “He posted it on the door so you see it before you walk in. You don’t have to walk in if you don’t agree with it.”
For Scheunemann, the sign remains firmly in place, serving as a permanent fixture of his restaurant’s identity.
