A PRIVATE JET WAS WAITING TO TAKE ME TO CHICAGO WHEN MY SEVEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHISPERED THAT GRANDMA TOOK HER TO A SECRET PLACE
That day, she sat with her shoulders hunched, dragging her fork through untouched eggs.
“Sweetheart, you need to eat.”
She stared down at her mug.
“Daddy? Do you really have to go?”
I smiled gently. “Only two nights. I’ll be home before your spelling test.”
Her lip trembled.
“Grandma Wendy says promises don’t count when grown-ups have important things.”
I felt irritation rise instantly.
Wendy, my mother-in-law, had moved into our guest cottage six months earlier after her husband died.
At first, I’d welcomed her, because my wife Jessi loved her mother.
Slowly, though, Wendy had begun treating our home as hers.
Then Fiona glanced toward the hallway.
That single look changed everything.
It was not the guilty glance of a child hiding a broken toy.
It was fear.
“Fiona,” I said carefully. “Has Grandma done something that frightened you?”
She shook her head much too fast.
Fiona leaned toward me and gripped the edge of the table until her knuckles turned white.
“Daddy, don’t go to Chicago.”
I knelt beside her. “Tell me why.”
Her eyes filled with tears. “Grandma takes me somewhere when you’re gone.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know. She makes me lie down in the back seat first.”
