Avocado Seed Tea: The Real Science vs. Viral Internet Health Claims
Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes | Yield: 2 Servings
Ingredients
- 1 Clean seed from an organic avocado
- 2 Cups Filtered water
- 1 Stick of true Ceylon cinnamon (helps balance blood sugar and masks the seed’s natural bitterness)
- 1 Fresh lemon wedge
- Optional: 1/2 tsp Raw honey
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Wash and Prep the Seed
Remove the seed from a fresh avocado. Rinse it thoroughly under cold water to remove any remaining green pulp. Pat it completely dry with a towel.
2. Break Down the Core
💡 Chef’s Tip: Whole avocado seeds are incredibly tough and can ruin standard blender blades or present a choking hazard if left whole in a pot.
- Place the seed on a secure cutting board. Using a heavy chef’s knife, carefully split the seed in half, then quarter it.
- Use a cheese grater to grate the soft inner core into fine shavings, or use a food processor to grind the quarters into a coarse powder. The shavings will quickly turn an orange or reddish hue as they oxidize in the air, which is entirely normal.
3. The Decoction Boil
Bring 2 cups of filtered water to a rolling boil in a small saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons of your grated avocado seed shavings along with the cinnamon stick. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it simmer gently for 10 minutes.
4. Strain and Serve
The liquid will turn a rich, amber-red color. Turn off the heat and pour the tea through a fine-mesh strainer directly into your mug, discarding the spent shavings. Squeeze in a fresh wedge of lemon and stir in raw honey if desired to smooth out the astringent, earthy flavor notes.
