Every evening, my sister took a shower, then walked into grandpa’s bedroom with her hair still wet and locked the door. One night, I followed Her—and what I heard inside made me reach for my phone immediately…
two jobs to pay the household bills and cover my college expenses.
Emily was in her final year of nursing school. With the guidance of one of her instructors, she had learned how to clean and
dress Grandpa’s wound.
“Then why did you take a shower every time?” I asked.
“So I could be as clean as possible and avoid introducing another infection. I changed my clothes too. Grandpa made me

“You tried to save him,” she said through her tears. “But you should never have had to carry something like this alone.”
Grandpa remained in the hospital for two weeks. When Emily’s nursing instructor learned about the cost of his treatment,
she organized a fundraiser.
For years, Grandpa had repaired his neighbors’ cars for free, helped struggling single mothers, and cleared snow from elderly
residents’ yards during winter.
When the community found out what had happened, they raised the entire amount needed for his treatment in only three
days.
The day Grandpa returned home, we sat together on the same couch and took another picture. This time, he no longer
looked stern. He had one arm around Emily and was trying to hide his tear
