How to Rule Out the Scary Stuff (Pests & Termites)

1. Flaxseeds vs. Mouse Droppings
- The Shape: Flaxseeds are completely flat, smooth, slightly shiny, and have a teardrop shape with a pointed tip. Mouse droppings are cylindrical (like tiny raisins or grains of rice) with rounded or tapered ends.
- The Texture: If you crush a seed with a paper towel, it will be hard or split like grain. Droppings are softer and will degrade differently.
2. Flaxseeds vs. Termite Frass (Droppings)
- The Size: Termite droppings (frass) are incredibly microscopic—about the size of coarse sand or pepper grains. They also feature six distinct concave sides if viewed under a magnifying glass.
- The Pattern: Termites push their debris out of tiny “kick holes” in drywall, creating a very neat, perfect little pyramid pile directly beneath the hole. A spilled heating pad usually creates a wider, more scattered trail as it moves.
