I FAKED A TRIP TO CANADA, SUSPECTING THE HOUSEKEEPER WAS HURTING MY DAUGHTERS

Marisol stepped between them and Chloe. “Do not touch her.”

I stood straight up out of my chair.

Because I’d spent three months suspecting the wrong woman. The danger in my house wasn’t the housekeeper.

It was the woman I was about to marry.

PART 2

I did not storm out of that security room and into the living room, though every cell in my body wanted to. I made myself sit back down, because I needed to see all of it, and because a man who reacts in rage documents nothing, and I was already, in some cold and functional part of my mind, building a case.

So I watched. And I listened, because Hector had the audio live.

I watched Marisol break Chloe’s grip on my daughter’s wrist, gently, firmly, putting her own body at risk to protect a child who wasn’t hers. I watched Chloe turn her venom on Marisol — the “hired help,” the “nobody” — and I watched Marisol absorb it without flinching, because Marisol had clearly decided, months ago, that taking Chloe’s abuse was worth it if it meant standing between that woman and my girls.

And I watched what happened after Chloe stormed off.

I watched Marisol kneel down and gather my crying daughters into her arms. I watched her retrieve the stuffed rabbit from the high shelf and press it back into Sofia’s hands. I watched her wipe Valeria’s tears and say something that made my nine-year-old almost smile. I watched my daughters cling to this woman the way children cling to safety, and I finally understood what I’d been misreading for months.

They didn’t go silent when I came home because Marisol had turned them against me.

They went silent because they were living in fear, and they’d learned to be small and quiet and invisible to survive Chloe, and they couldn’t tell the difference anymore between safe adults and dangerous ones except for Marisol, who they’d correctly identified as the one person in that house protecting them.
