I Found a Bag Full of Strange Glass Tubes in My Late Uncle’s Bedroom Drawer. I Have No Idea What They’re For…

The Mystery Solved: Vintage Mercury Tilt Switches

These intriguing glass tubes are vintage mercury tilt switches (often referred to simply as mercury switches or silent switches).

Inside each hermetically sealed glass bulb is a small drop of liquid mercury (which looks like shiny silver balls or beads when separated) and two or more electrical contacts leading out of one end.

How They Work:

Mercury is a unique metal because it remains a liquid at room temperature while maintaining excellent electrical conductivity. The mechanism is beautifully simple:

  • The “On” Position: When the glass tube is tilted in one direction, the heavy liquid mercury rolls down to the bottom, pools over the metal contacts, and completes the electrical circuit.
  • The “Off” Position: When tilted back the other way, the mercury rolls away from the contacts, instantly breaking the circuit.

Because the liquid metal is completely sealed inside the glass, it never rusts, corrodes, or wears down like traditional mechanical copper switches. Furthermore, because there are no springs or metal levers snapping together, they are completely silent when operated.
