The Answer: A Charcoal Box Iron

Long before the luxury of plugging a lightweight, steam-producing appliance into a wall outlet, keeping clothes wrinkle-free was an exhausting and genuinely hazardous household chore. The “mystery object” in the photo is an antique charcoal box iron.

Here is how our ancestors managed to press their Sunday best:

• The Fuel: Instead of electricity, these irons were literally powered by fire. To use it, you had to lift the latch—often shaped like a rooster or a bird, as seen in the photo—open the lid, and fill the hollow metal box with glowing, smoldering charcoal straight from the stove or fireplace.
