My Boss Called Me at 11 P.M. and Said, “Come to the Hotel Tonight With Me. If You Don’t Come, You’re Fired—and Tell No One.” I Went… But When I Opened the Door, Saw Him Waiting Inside, and Heard What He Wanted Me to Do, I Couldn’t Believe What I Was Hearing

“So there isn’t actually going to be a wedding?”

Mr. Harrison hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

I stepped backward.

“No.”

“Emma—”

“No. Absolutely not.”

“My mother asked if Reverend Keller could perform a small blessing. Nothing legally binding. No paperwork. No license. Just words.”

“You brought me here without telling me anything, threatened my job, and expected me to walk into some fake wedding?”

His face fell.

“You’re right.”

“I know I’m right.”

“I panicked.”

“That doesn’t excuse it.”

“No.”

He didn’t argue.

That surprised me.

Instead, he walked to the table, picked up his phone, and placed it in front of me.

On the screen was a photograph of an elderly woman.

She was sitting in a hospital bed, smiling weakly.

Beside her was Mr. Harrison.

I almost didn’t recognize him.

He wasn’t wearing a suit.

He was kneeling beside her with his head against her shoulder.

“She raised me alone,” he said quietly. “My father left when I was nine. She worked two jobs. Everything I have started with her.”

I swallowed.

“You could have just asked me.”

“I was afraid you’d say no.”

“I might have.”

“I know.”

“And threatening me made it better?”

“No.”

He looked ashamed now.

“If you walk out that door, you still have your job. I’ll put it in writing tonight. I was wrong.”

That changed something.

Not enough to forgive him.

But enough to make me listen.

“How long?”

His eyes lifted.

“Ten minutes.”

“And I’m not signing anything.”

“Nothing.”

“No photos posted anywhere.”

“Agreed.”

“No touching me except what is absolutely necessary.”

“Agreed.”

“And tomorrow, we have a very serious conversation about boundaries.”

For the first time that night, the corner of his mouth moved.

“Definitely.”

Twenty minutes later, I stood outside the upstairs suite wearing the white dress.

It fit almost perfectly, which annoyed me more than anything.

The ring felt heavy on my finger.

Mr. Harrison stood beside me.

He suddenly looked nervous.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t make me regret it.”
