My Boyfriend Vanished When I Told Him I Was Pregnant—Then Grandpa Saw My Baby’s Face and Revealed a 20-Year Secret

That was how a secret buried for twenty years came back into my life.

My daughter Nora spent eleven days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

She was premature, tiny and furious at the world.

I loved that about her.

The nurses called her “the fighter” because every time they removed one tube, she seemed personally determined to prove she never needed it in the first place.

When I finally brought her home, Grandpa Walter was waiting on his porch.

My parents died in a highway accident when I was nine, so Grandpa had raised me. He attended school plays, taught me to drive, threatened my first boyfriend with a garden shovel, and sat beside me through every prenatal appointment Caleb should have attended.

At seventy-four, he was the most dependable man I knew.

He hurried down the porch steps when he saw my car.

“There she is!”

I laughed.

“Which one?”

“Both of you.”

I lifted Nora’s carrier.

Grandpa immediately held out his arms.
