My Husband Bought Himself First Class and Left Me in Economy on Our 25th Anniversary – Then the Captain Announced My Name over the Speaker and Asked Me to Come Forward Alone

I opened the door but kept the chain latched.

Richard frowned. “This has gone far enough.”

“Did Jacob leave me for another girl?”

I had applied to that Paris culinary program myself.

His face changed. “That was twenty-five years ago.”

“Did he?”

“Let me in.”

“No.”

“Margaret…”

“Did you steal my recipe box?”

This has gone far enough.

Silence.

My stomach dropped. “You did.”

“I was nineteen.”

“And the letter from Paris?”

He went still.

That frightened me more than anything he’d said.

Did you steal my recipe box?

“There was a letter, wasn’t there?”

“Margaret… Did I get in?”

“You would’ve gone.” I gripped the door. “Oh my God.”

“I loved you.”

“So you took it?”

“I knew what would happen if you left.”

“What?”

That frightened me more than anything he’d said.

“You’d build a life there. Maybe with him. You wouldn’t need me.”

“You stole my choice.”

“I gave you a family.”

“I gave you that family too.”

“I spent twenty-five years making sure you never had to worry.”

“No. You spent twenty-five years making sure I needed you.”

You stole my choice.

His jaw tightened. “You never complained.”

“Because you made me believe this was the life I’d chosen.”

He looked away.

“Was that why you never wanted me working?”

“I wanted stability.”

“For whom?”

You never complained.

He didn’t answer. I finally understood.

“At first you were afraid I’d choose Jacob.”

Richard said nothing.

“And after that, you were afraid I’d choose myself.”

His face told me enough.

I closed the door.

“Margaret.”

I finally understood.

Richard had admitted what he’d done.

But I still didn’t know what had happened to Jacob.

I found Grandma’s peach cobbler recipe.

Behind it was a phone number.

Underneath, Jacob had written:

‘If you want the rest, call me.’

He still couldn’t tell me what had really happened.

I did.

He answered immediately. “Maggie?”

“How did you know it was me?”

“I was hoping.”

I looked at the locked hotel door. “I have questions.”

“I figured you would.”

“Can you meet me tonight?”

“Name the place.”

I have questions.

Jacob was waiting at a small restaurant near the beach.

I sat across from him. “No more half-answers.”

“Okay.”

“Did you cheat on me?”

“No.”

“Did you take another girl to Paris?”

No more half-answers.

His eyebrows pulled together. “What girl?”
