My Husband Left Me With Our Infant Twins for a Vacation – What He Found When He Returned Changed Everything
Then he looked around the house.
“I come home every day to crying babies, dirty bottles, and a wife who is always stressed and exhausted.”
I didn’t know what to say.
Then I noticed the green duffel bag near the door.
He had already packed.
“What is that?”
He didn’t look at me.
“I’m going fishing.”
I stared at him.
“For how long?”
“Four days.”
“With who?”
“Simon and Theo.”
I couldn’t believe he had already made the arrangements.
“When did you plan this?”
“I needed a break.”
I looked at the twins.
Then back at him.
“How am I supposed to do this alone for four days? I haven’t slept properly in months.”
He barely looked up while checking his bag.
Then he shrugged.
“You wanted to be a mother, so act like one.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
Not because I didn’t know how to care for my children.
I knew.
I’d been doing it every day.
They hurt because they made it sound as though motherhood was my responsibility alone.
As though the two children we had dreamed about together belonged only to me.
I stood there holding my daughter’s bottle.
I wanted him to realize what he was saying.
I wanted him to apologize.
Instead, I said nothing.
I let him leave.
Four Days of Silence
At 3:14 the next morning, I was sitting on the nursery floor.
One baby was resting against each side of me.
I hadn’t slept.
Brandon hadn’t called.
He hadn’t asked whether the girls were okay.
He hadn’t asked whether I needed anything.
He simply disappeared into his vacation.
I remember staring at my phone and wondering how someone could leave his family behind so easily.
Then, hours later, I saw the photograph.
Brandon had posted it online.
He was smiling beside the lake.
Simon and Theo were in the picture.
The caption read:
“Finally getting the peace and quiet I deserve.”
I stared at the screen for a long time.
Then I put the phone down.
I didn’t have the energy to argue with a photograph.
I had babies to care for.
My Sister Saw the Post
Summer saw the photograph too.
She called me almost immediately.
“What happened?”
I told her.
She didn’t lecture me.
She didn’t ask why I hadn’t stopped him.
She simply arrived with groceries.
Then she washed bottles.
She made me sit down.
And she cooked enough food that I finally ate a proper meal.
It was the first real meal I’d had that day.
Not long afterward, Dawn called.
Brandon’s mother had apparently discovered that he had left without arranging any help for me.
She was furious.
Dawn came over as well.
