My Husband Won ‘Parent of the Year’ for Raising Our 6 Kids While I Sat Alone in the Corner – Then Our Youngest Daughter Took the Mic and Said, ‘There’s One Little Detail’

“He switched to trumpet six months ago.”

Richard blinked.

“I’ve been telling people he plays piano.”

“Exactly.”

He looked at Sam.

Our son shrugged.

“You never asked.”

That one hurt him.

I could tell.

I could have enjoyed watching Richard fail.

Mostly, I felt tired.

But for the first time, he was learning the difference between financing his children’s lives and actually knowing them.

One evening, I passed Lily’s bedroom.

She was reading aloud.

Richard sat beside her.

She stumbled over the same word three times.

“Focus,” he snapped.

Lily went quiet.

I stopped in the hallway.

Then Richard sighed.

“Sorry.”

A pause.

His voice softened.

“Let’s try it again.”

She did.

He stayed.

No audience.

No phones.

No applause.

I kept walking.

Meanwhile, I kept rebuilding my own life.

A month later, I completed the first certification I needed to return to my career.

I printed the confirmation email after everyone went to bed.

For a long time, I stared at my name.

It seemed small compared with what I had once accomplished.

But it was mine.

I updated my résumé.

Opened an account in my own name.

Started applying for positions.

Whatever happened to my marriage, one thing was certain.

My future would not depend entirely on Richard again.

Months later, nobody mentioned the Parent of the Year award anymore.

I never knew what Richard did with the plaque.

I never asked.

One Tuesday evening, he came through the front door carrying groceries.

Lily followed him.

She was talking so quickly I could barely understand her.

“Tell Mom!”

Richard put down the bags.

“She got full marks on her spelling test.”

Lily beamed.

Then she narrowed her eyes at him playfully.

“What’s my favorite color?”
