My Wife Left Me in a Wheelchair With Two Kids — Saying She “Didn’t Sign Up to Be My Nurse”

She didn’t leave a forwarding address.

Ray — do you remember what you carried, the second year? When I couldn’t afford a lawyer and you drove me to the courthouse in your mother’s van?”

Ray’s face changed.

“The papers.”

“The papers.

I filed for divorce on grounds of abandonment eight years ago.

She was served by publication because nobody could find her.

She didn’t appear.

The judge granted it by default.

It’s been final for seven years and eleven months.

It’s in a folder in my closet with the girls’ birth certificates, because I couldn’t afford a safe.”

I remembered that day.

Ray’s mother’s van, which smelled of cinnamon because she used it for the bakery, with the wheelchair ramp Ray had built out of plywood that flexed every time I rolled up it.

The courthouse, with its two steps and no ramp, and Ray carrying me — actually carrying me, thirty-three years old — up them while a security guard held the door and looked at the floor.
