On Easter Sunday my daughter called and asked me to come and get her, and her mother-in-law put a hand on my chest in the doorway in front of thirty guests and told me to go home. My son-in-law told me to call the police, because the Chief was standing in his back yard eating food he’d paid for. He was right about that — and it is the reason he lost everything.

And it was not, in the end, an envelope of cash. I want to say that clearly, because everybody assumes an envelope and there wasn’t one and there almost never is.

It was a house.

Harker’s daughter and her husband bought a property in an Ostrand development in 2020 at a price that Yvonne’s people demonstrated, over about forty pages, was not a price. Below sheet, below the four comparable units on the same street, with the difference structured as an allowance that was never carried out.

Ninety-one thousand dollars, spread across a young couple’s mortgage, four years before any of this.

That is what a chief of police costs in a county of forty thousand people. It is not a briefcase. It is a discount on a kitchen that his son-in-law is still, presumably, standing in.

There had also been one before Nell.

Her name is Perpetua Slade. She is thirty-four. She dated Sutton Ostrand for a year when they were both twenty-six and she left the county in 2018, and there is a call log entry from March of that year with a unit dispatched and cleared as unfounded in nineteen minutes.
