SHE HUMILIATED THE WRONG MAID AT HER ENGAGEMENT PARTY—THEN THE MAN SHE WAS MARRYING LEARNED WHO THAT WOMAN REALLY WAS

“You…” Vanessa whispered.

Maya lowered her hand.

Nobody moved.

Then a man’s voice came from behind the crowd.

“Maya?”

It was not Daniel Whitmore.

It was his father.

Richard Whitmore had been walking toward the podium to toast his son’s engagement when the confrontation erupted. He now stood completely still beneath the chandeliers, one hand gripping the back of a chair.

The silver-haired billionaire looked as though someone had struck him.

“Maya Johnson?”

Maya turned.

For six years she had worked under Richard Whitmore’s roof.

For six years he had passed her in hallways, thanked her for managing Christmas dinners, asked her to prepare guest rooms, trusted her with keys to a mansion filled with art worth more than most people earned in a lifetime.

And never once had he spoken her full name like that.

Her stomach tightened.

“Yes, sir?”

Richard stared at her.

Then his gaze moved across her face as though searching for something beneath the woman she had become.

His lips parted.

“Elena,” he said.

Maya’s blood went cold.

Nobody at Ashkam Estate knew her mother’s name.

Nobody.

Richard took one step toward her.

“You’re Elena Johnson’s daughter.”

A murmur passed through the ballroom.
