Should Adults Be Allowed to Order Kids’ Meals?

What About Adults Who Order Kids’ Meals for Dietary Reasons?

This is another situation worth considering.

Some adults may have specific reasons for needing smaller meals.

Others may have appetite limitations or simply prefer a smaller serving.

A rigid age-only policy doesn’t account for every customer’s circumstances.

That doesn’t necessarily mean restaurants must make exceptions, but it does suggest that offering adult-sized alternatives in smaller portions could be a more inclusive approach.

What Should You Do If a Restaurant Says No?

The easiest answer is:

Respect the policy and ask what smaller options are available.

You can simply say:

“No problem. Do you have a smaller portion or half-size option?”

Many restaurants have alternatives that aren’t obvious from the main menu.

And if they don’t?

You can order an adult meal and take the leftovers home if that’s practical.

There’s no need for the interaction to become an argument.

What If the Kids’ Meal Is Available on the App?

This can get especially confusing.

A restaurant’s ordering app may display a kids’ meal without making the eligibility rules immediately obvious.

If the system lets you add it to your order, you might reasonably assume it’s available.

But digital ordering systems can have their own restrictions.

If an order is canceled, changed, or refused because of an eligibility rule, check the restaurant’s stated policy rather than assuming the app listing tells the whole story.

The Toy Question

Let’s address the elephant in the room.

Can an adult get the toy?

If the kids’ meal includes a toy, that’s generally part of the restaurant’s offering and subject to its policies.

If you order a kids’ meal legitimately and the restaurant provides the toy with it, that’s one thing.

But if a restaurant specifically restricts the entire kids’ meal to children, asking for the toy separately may not change that policy.

And yes, plenty of adults collect restaurant toys.

I don’t see anything wrong with that!

Some of them are genuinely fun little collectibles.

Are Kids’ Meals Actually Good Value?

That depends.

Don’t assume a kids’ meal is automatically cheaper in every situation.

Compare:

  • Total price
  • Portion size
  • Drink size
  • Side
  • Included extras
  • Promotions
  • Loyalty discounts

Sometimes an adult combo with a coupon can be a better value.

Sometimes the kids’ meal is clearly the better fit.

The important thing is to compare what you’re actually getting.
