SIX YEARS AFTER MY DAUGHTER’S TWIN WAS DECLARED STILLBORN, A HOSPITAL BLOOD DRAW REVEALED SHE HAD A SISTER THE WHOLE FAMILY HAD BEEN LIED TO ABOUT
What came back wasn’t a clerical typo. It was a photocopied intake form from the night of the twins’ birth, showing two live births, two sets of footprints, two working sets of vitals recorded twelve minutes apart — followed by a second document, added to the file two days later, amending Baby B’s status to deceased, signed not by the attending obstetrician but by a hospital administrator whose name meant nothing to me at the time.
It would mean something within the week.
I brought both documents to Desmond’s apartment on a Thursday evening, because some conversations can’t happen over a phone.
He opened the door already looking like a man expecting exactly this.
“You need to explain this to me,” I said, holding up the photocopies before I’d even stepped inside. “Because it says here that both of our daughters were born alive.”
Something in his face didn’t crumble so much as finally stop holding itself up.
