The Blood Pressure Myth: Is 120/80 Really “Normal”?
Official Adult Blood Pressure Categories
Modern medicine evaluates blood pressure using fixed health risk categories rather than traditional age-based brackets. A reading that continuously stays above 120/80 mm Hg indicates that the heart is working harder than it should, regardless of whether you are 25 or 65.
| Blood Pressure Category | Systolic (Top Number) | Diastolic (Bottom Number) | |
| Normal | Less than 120 mm Hg | and | Less than 80 mm Hg |
| Elevated | 120–129 mm Hg | and | Less than 80 mm Hg |
| Stage 1 Hypertension | 130–139 mm Hg | or | 80–89 mm Hg |
| Stage 2 Hypertension | 140 mm Hg or higher | or | 90 mm Hg or higher |
| Hypertensive Crisis | Higher than 180 mm Hg | and/or | Higher than 120 mm Hg |
⚠️ Important Note: A single high reading does not mean you have high blood pressure. Diagnosis requires a consistent trend of elevated numbers measured over several days or weeks under calm, resting conditions.
