The CEO’s Son-in-Law Fired Me After 21 Years — By Noon, He Learned Why My Name Was Buried in the Company’s Founding Documents-0198t

“I’m afraid we’re making some difficult leadership changes.”

I looked at the box again.

Apparently, the difficult part had already been done for me.

“You packed my desk before speaking to me?”

Grant smiled.

“I thought it would make the transition easier.”

“For whom?”

His smile weakened.

The HR man suddenly found the carpet fascinating.

Grant closed the door.

“Evelyn, you’ve been valuable here for a long time.”

“Twenty-one years.”

“Exactly. And nobody is taking that away from you.”

That sentence told me everything.

People only said nobody could take something away from you immediately before taking it away.

Grant folded his hands.

“But Holloway has to evolve.”

There it was.

His favorite word.

Evolve.

Over the last several months, it had apparently meant firing a maintenance director three years before retirement, eliminating half the purchasing department, replacing local suppliers with “strategic partners,” and hiring two consulting firms staffed almost entirely by Grant’s former business-school friends.

Now evolution had arrived at my office.

He slid an envelope across my desk.

“Your position is being eliminated effective immediately.”
