The Green Roommate: What Having a Snake Plant in Your Home Really Means
The “Neglect Recipe”: How to Keep Your Snake Plant Alive
The number one mistake people make with a snake plant is trying to take care of it too much. To keep yours healthy, follow this incredibly simple routine:
The Ingredients:
- A container with excellent drainage holes (terracotta pots are perfect)
- Well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix
- A bright window (though low light works too!)
Instructions:
- The Light: Place your plant in indirect sunlight. While it can handle direct sun, it will easily tolerate those dim, dark corners of your living room where other plants quickly wither away.
- The Golden Watering Rule: Only water the plant when the soil is 100% bone dry all the way to the bottom of the pot. In the spring and summer, this usually means watering once every 2 to 3 weeks. In the winter, you might only water it once a month.
- How to Water: Pour water thoroughly into the soil until it runs out of the drainage holes at the bottom, empty the saucer so it isn’t sitting in stagnant puddles, and then walk away.
A Quick Safety Note: While snake plants are phenomenal for humans, they do contain mild toxins called saponins to protect themselves in the wild. If chewed on by curious cats or dogs, it can cause mild stomach upset or drooling. If you have pets, simply place the pot up on a high shelf, mantle, or plant stand out of their reach!
