The Secret Emergency Key Fob Hack Every Driver Needs to Know
Step 1: Find the Hidden Physical Key
Take a close look at your key fob plastic casing. While it looks like a solid block of electronics, hidden right inside is a standard mechanical key blade.
- How to release it: Flip the key fob over and look for a tiny mechanical slider switch or a small push-button on the edge or back of the casing. Hold that release button down with your fingernail and pull on the top keyring loop—the emergency physical metal key will slide right out of its hidden compartment.
Step 2: Unlocking a Car Door with No Keyhole
Now that you have the metal key in hand, you might look at your driver’s side door handle and realize there is no visible keyhole to put it into. Modern car designers hide them to keep the vehicle looking sleek, but the lock mechanism is still there!
- How to find it: Look closely at the right-hand piece of your driver’s side door handle (the small, stationary plastic cap next to the pulling part of the handle). On the very bottom underside of this cap, you will see a tiny slot. Insert the tip of your emergency key into that bottom slot and gently pry upward or outward. The plastic cap will pop off, revealing a standard manual key cylinder beneath it. Insert your key, turn it, and you’re inside the car!
