The Truth About Earwigs: What Finding This Bug in Your Home Really Means
Debunking the Biggest Earwig Myths
Before discussing how to get rid of them, let’s clear up some significant misinformation that often circulates online about these insects:
The “Ear” Myth: The name “earwig” stems from an ancient European superstition that these bugs crawl into the ears of sleeping humans, burrow into their brains, and lay eggs. This is completely false. Earwigs have absolutely no interest in humans or human ears, cannot burrow through bone or tissue, and lay their eggs exclusively in damp soil.
The Pincer Myth: While the pincher-like appendages (cerci) on their abdomen look incredibly painful, earwigs are entirely non-venomous and do not sting. If you pick one up, it might attempt to give you a tiny pinch with its tail as a defensive reflex, but the pinch is incredibly weak and rarely manages to break human skin.
Simple Steps to Keep Earwigs Out
Instead of reaching for heavy, toxic chemical pesticide sprays, you can easily manage and eliminate indoor earwigs by altering their environment:

- Dehumidify and Dry: Run a dehumidifier in damp basements or crawlspaces. Fixing minor plumbing leaks under sinks will instantly eliminate their indoor water source, forcing any stray bugs to leave.
- Seal Your Doors and Windows: Check the bottom of your exterior doors at night. If you can see light escaping under the door, it’s an open invitation for earwigs. Installing a new, tight-fitting rubber door sweep is one of the most effective exclusion tactics available.
- Create a Clean Perimeter Zone: Keep a 1-to-2-foot zone directly against your home’s concrete foundation clear of heavy mulch, dense dead leaves, or firewood piles. Keeping this border dry creates a natural barrier that earwigs hate to cross.
- The Simple Soy Sauce Trap: If you have a few stubborn earwigs remaining inside, mix equal parts soy sauce and vegetable oil in a small, open plastic container and place it on the floor near where you saw them. The earwigs are intensely attracted to the fermenting smell of the soy sauce, crawl into the container, and get trapped by the heavy oil.
