The Ultimate Lazy-Day Comfort Food: Slow Cooker Frozen Pierogi
Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 2 to 3 hours | Servings: 4–6
Ingredients
- 1 Large bag (approx. 2 lbs / 900g) Frozen pierogies (Potato & cheese or potato & onion flavors work best)
- 1/2 Cup (1 stick) Unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1 Medium yellow onion, thinly sliced or diced
- 1/2 Cup Chicken or vegetable broth (keeps them perfectly moist)
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp Dried parsley or chives
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
Optional Add-ins for Extra Comfort:
- 1 Cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese (added at the very end)
- 1/2 Cup of cooked, crumbled bacon
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep the Slow Cooker
Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker insert with a little bit of cooking spray or a smear of butter. This prevents the starch in the pierogi dough from sticking to the sides as it heats up.
2. Layer the Ingredients
Scatter half of your sliced or diced onions across the bottom of the slow cooker. Empty the bag of frozen pierogies directly over the onions, spreading them out as evenly as possible. Top the pierogies with the remaining onions.
3. Add the Flavor Boosters
Distribute the cubes of butter evenly across the top layer of the pierogies. Pour the chicken or vegetable broth around the sides of the pot (try not to wash the butter off the top). Finally, sprinkle your garlic powder, dried herbs, salt, and black pepper over everything.
4. Cook Low and Slow
Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 2.5 to 3 hours (or on HIGH for 1.5 to 2 hours). You’ll know they are ready when the pierogies are completely tender, hot throughout, and the onions have softened into the rich butter sauce. Stir them gently once halfway through the cooking time to ensure all the pockets get coated in the liquid gold.
