What happens to your body if you don’t drink enough water

Poor Cognitive Function and Mood Swings
Your brain is about 75% water, so it should come as no surprise that dehydration has a profound impact on cognitive function. Even mild dehydration can impair concentration, short-term memory, and decision-making. It can also cause brain fog, making it difficult to focus or think clearly.
Research has shown that dehydrated individuals are more likely to experience anxiety, irritability, and low mood. In one study, participants who were mildly dehydrated reported feeling more tense, anxious, and depressed than those who were properly hydrated. If you find yourself feeling unusually irritable or struggling to concentrate, a glass of water might be exactly what you need.

Rapid Heartbeat and Low Blood Pressure
Severe dehydration can lead to a rapid heartbeat and a drop in blood pressure. When blood volume decreases, the heart has to pump faster to circulate oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. This can cause palpitations, a feeling of fluttering in the chest, and even fainting.
Low blood pressure from dehydration can also cause dizziness when standing up, a condition known as orthostatic hypotension. In extreme cases, dehydration can lead to shock, organ failure, and death. This is why it is so important to recognize the early signs of dehydration and address them before they escalate.

How Much Water Do You Actually Need?
The amount of water you need depends on your age, weight, activity level, climate, and overall health. As a general guideline, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends:

Men: About 3.7 liters (125 ounces) of total water per day

Women: About 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water per day

This includes water from all sources, including food, beverages, and drinking water. However, individual needs vary widely. If you are physically active, live in a hot climate, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are recovering from illness, you will need more water than the average person.

A simple way to check if you are drinking enough is to monitor your urine color. If it is pale yellow, you are well-hydrated. If it is dark, you need to drink more.
