It was a cold evening, the kind that makes people close their windows early and gather around heaters, fireplaces, and cups of hot tea. In a small house at the end of a quiet street, a young couple sat together with their three-year-old daughter.

To their neighbors, Daniel and Sara appeared to be an ordinary young family. They had been married for several years and had recently moved into the modest house after saving for months. Their daughter, Lily, was energetic, curious, and known for asking endless questions.

But that evening would become the subject of whispers throughout the neighborhood.

It began with something that seemed harmless.

Earlier that day, Sara had been cleaning the living room while Daniel tried to repair an old fireplace. The fireplace had not been used regularly, and years of dust had gathered around it. Daniel wanted to get it working before the coldest part of winter arrived.

Lily watched him from across the room.

“Daddy, what is that?” she asked.

“A fireplace,” Daniel answered.

“What does it do?”

“It keeps the house warm.”

Later that night, Daniel noticed that the fireplace opening was larger than he had expected. He had removed part of an old decorative panel while attempting to inspect the chimney.

Sara came into the room and looked at it.

“It looks different,” she said.

“I’m going to fix it tomorrow,” Daniel replied.

Lily had fallen asleep upstairs.

The couple continued talking about the house, their finances, and the difficulties of being young parents. They were tired. They had been under pressure for months, and every unexpected expense seemed to make life harder.

Sometime after midnight, Lily woke up crying.
