I promised my dying wife I’d keep raising her three children as my own — two years later my twelve-year-old put her pen down and said, « Before you open those boxes, you need to know the truth about Mum. »
I promised my dying wife I’d keep raising her three children as my own — two years later my twelve-year-old put her pen down and said, « Before you open those boxes, you need to know the truth about Mum. »
Katia and I were married for eight years.
When I met her in 2014 she had three children — Levi was six, Noor was four, and Sasha was one — and their father had gone the previous March and had not been seen since.
I married her in June of 2015. I adopted all three in March of 2020.
Katia died on the eleventh of October, 2023, eleven weeks after a diagnosis, at forty-one.
In the last fortnight she was frightened of exactly one thing, and it was not dying. It was what would happen to those three.
And I sat on the edge of that bed and held her hand and told her that nothing was going to change.
I meant it, and I have kept it, and it turned out to be the wrong promise.
Since then it has been the four of us.
Levi is seventeen and Noor is fifteen and they have their own lives, which is correct.
Sasha is twelve and has been my shadow since she was about four. She is the most observant person in that house by a distance and she says almost nothing.
Thursday the ninth of October.
Two days off the second anniversary, which I had noticed and had said nothing about.
It was the two of us. I was at the counter doing something with mince and Sasha was at the island with her homework.
And I said, without thinking about it at all: « We should do the attic at the weekend. I want to get your mum’s boxes sorted out properly. »
She stopped writing.
She did not get upset. She did not go red. She closed the exercise book, quite carefully, and pushed it away about four inches, and looked straight at me.
She said: « I think that’s a bad idea. »
I dried my hands and turned round.
I said, « Why? Don’t you want to see the photographs? »
And my twelve-year-old held my eyes — and she has a completely flat face when she wants one, she gets it from her mother — and said:
« No. And before you open those boxes you need to know the truth about Mum. »
I did not say anything for about four seconds.
And then Sasha took a breath and talked for eleven minutes.
What she told me.

Renny Doleman did leave in March of 2014. That part is true and it has always been true.
There was a non-molestation order in the July of that year, twelve months, granted on the papers.
Katia had reasons and the reasons are documented and I have now read them and they are not in dispute and I want that established before anything else.
She was right in 2014. Completely right.
He came back in 2016 and she said no, and she was right then too.
And in 2018 he stopped drinking.
The ninth of August, 2018. He has that date in about nine of the letters.
And from the November of 2018 he wrote.
Forty-one letters between November 2018 and June 2023.
To Katia. To that address. Our address, from 2019.
Not one of them was opened.
They are in a shoebox inside a bigger box in my own attic, in date order, with the flaps still sealed, and about eleven of them have please written on the outside of the envelope.
Katia kept every single one and never opened one and never told me they existed.
And then there is the other thing in that box.
In February of 2019 Katia applied for a step-parent adoption so that I could adopt her children.
For that to happen, Renny Doleman had to be served. That is not optional. The court has to make a genuine effort to notify the other parent.
The address she gave the court was 14 Farrow Row.
He left that address in the autumn of 2015. She knew he had left it, because two of the forty-one letters — the ones from 2018 — have his current address printed at the top, and she had them in her hands in 2019.
Service failed. The court ordered substituted service by publication, which is a notice in a local paper, which is what courts do when a parent cannot be found.
He did not respond, because he was living eleven miles away and does not read that paper, and nobody in the world reads those notices.
His parental rights were terminated by default on the fourth of March, 2020.
I sat in a room that day with three children and signed, and I have a photograph of the four of us on the steps outside that I have looked at about a thousand times.
And in the box, with the letters, there is the returned service packet.
Envelope, court stamp, not known at this address, dated the eleventh of April, 2019.
She kept that too.
Now.
I want to say something before I go on, because I have had eleven months and a man called Tobias Ren on Wednesdays to work out how to say it.
My wife was not a monster.
In 2014 a woman with a one-year-old got an order against a man because she had to. In 2016 she said no and she was right.
