I promised my dying wife I’d keep raising her three children as my own — two years later my twelve-year-old put her pen down and said, « Before you open those boxes, you need to know the truth about Mum. »
And in 2019 she was thirty-seven, she had three children, she had a husband who wanted to adopt them, and there was a stack of unopened envelopes in a cupboard from a man who was, by then, four years sober and asking.
And she had to make a decision, and the decision she made was to write an address on a form.
I do not think she sat down and plotted. I think she wrote 14 Farrow Row because it was the address in her head from the worst year of her life, and because writing the other one would have meant opening an envelope, and she had spent five years not opening envelopes.
That is not an excuse. It is the difference between a monster and a frightened person, and I have decided that difference matters, and about four people have told me I am being soft.
But she did one more thing and that one I have not made peace with.
She never told me.
Not in 2019. Not in 2020 on the steps of that building. Not in eight years of marriage.
I signed adoption papers believing that a man had walked away from three children and never once looked back, and my wife stood next to me knowing there were twenty-nine unopened letters in the airing cupboard.
I would have made the same decision. I want that on record. If she had shown me forty-one letters in 2019 and said « he’s been writing, and I can’t, and I’m frightened » — I would have adopted those children anyway, because they needed it and because it was right.
But I would have known. And I would have made it, instead of being handed it.
And how Sasha knows.
She found the boxes in December of 2023.
Ten years old, eight weeks after her mother’s funeral, up in the attic looking for a specific cardigan.
She read all of it. Over about three months, in secret, at ten and eleven years old.
She did not tell her brother. She did not tell her sister. She did not tell me.
She sat with it for fourteen months.
And then in March of this year she wrote to him.
The fourteenth of March, 2025. Eleven years old.
She copied the return address off the most recent envelope, wrote a letter, and posted it from the box outside the newsagent on her way to school.
And Renny Doleman wrote back.
Eleven letters between March of 2025 and October.
