I promised my dying wife I’d keep raising her three children as my own — two years later my twelve-year-old put her pen down and said, « Before you open those boxes, you need to know the truth about Mum. »

And Zofia Vasar cried for about four minutes before she could say anything, and then she told me that in the September of 2023 — three weeks before she died — Katia asked her to burn the boxes.

And Zofia said she would and did not.

She has never been able to explain why, other than that she could not put a dead woman’s handwriting in a bin, and that she assumed there were photographs in there.

If Zofia had done what she was asked, none of this exists. Sasha finds nothing in December. And I go on for thirty years being a man who adopted three abandoned children.

The letters. I read all forty-one over two evenings in the middle of October, with Sasha’s agreement, because they were addressed to her mother and I decided that made them hers now.

They are not what I expected.

There is no self-pity in them and there is almost no anger. There are two in 2019 that are angry and he apologises for both in the next one.

Mostly they are extremely boring. He tells her what job he is doing. He asks about the children by name and in birth order. He says he is not asking to see them, only to be told whether they are all right.

He asks that in thirty-one of the forty-one letters. Some version of are they all right.

The older two.

I told them on the twenty-sixth of October, together, both of them, everything, including my part in it.

Noor is fifteen. She asked for the letters that night and read them over a weekend and has been writing to him since December.

Levi is seventeen and he listened to the whole thing and then said: « I don’t want to know him and I don’t want you to bring it up again. »

And I said all right. And I have not brought it up again, and I will not, and if he changes his mind at twenty-five that is his business and the letters will be in the same box.

Two children in the same room, given the same information on the same evening, and opposite answers, and both of them right.

Renny Doleman.

I met him on the eighth of December, 2025, in a café in Thackery Green, without any of the children.

He is forty-four. He is a warehouse supervisor. He has been sober seven years and four months and he said the exact number without being asked, in the way that people who count do.

We were there for two hours and ten minutes.

He did not ask me for one single thing.
