After 31 Years of Marriage, My Husband Started Leaving Our Bed at Night ‘Because of His Back’ – Then I Heard Him Whisper, ‘Daddy Loves You Too’

Greg looked down at her immediately.

“It’s okay, Susan.”

I stared at him.

“Susan?”

“My mother,” he said.

“You named a kitten after your late mother?”

“It’s okay, Susan.”

For one completely insane second, that was the part my brain objected to most.

Then I looked at the hole.

“Greg, why are you burying a kitten?”

“God, no… I’m not burying anybody.”

He dropped the shovel and crouched lower.

“Listen.”

“Greg, why are you burying a kitten?”

I heard nothing.

Then…

A faint squeak came from somewhere beneath the garden edging.

My anger vanished.

“What was that?”

“Her brother. Or sister. I don’t know yet.”

Greg pointed toward a narrow gap beneath the wooden border.

A faint squeak came from somewhere beneath the garden edging.

“They were nesting under here. Susan was close enough for me to reach. The other one crawled farther back.”

Another tiny cry came from underneath the dirt.

Greg picked up the shovel again.

“I’m trying to widen the opening without collapsing it.”

I stared at my husband.
