I Sent Nearly $90,000 Home While Serving Overseas—Then I Returned Early and Found My Wife Sleeping in a Tool Shed With Her Head Shaved

Something was coming.

I was right.

After dessert, Mom placed a folder in front of me.

“I had something prepared for you.”

I opened it.

Power of attorney.

Financial authorization.

Account management permission.

All drafted by a lawyer I had never met.

I looked up.

Mom smiled warmly.

“With everything Naomi is going through, you shouldn’t be worrying about money. Let me keep handling the finances like I did while you were gone.”

Kendra nodded.

“You’ve got enough stress.”

I almost admired the arrogance.

Almost.

I closed the folder.

“So you want control of the new payment too?”

Mom reached across the table.

“Caleb, I’m your mother.”

There it was.

The sentence people use when they’ve run out of legitimate reasons to deserve your trust.

I leaned back.

“What did you buy with the first ninety thousand?”

The room went silent.

Kendra stopped chewing.

Mom’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“The money I sent home.”

“I used it for the household.”

“Which household?”

Mom frowned.

“This one.”

I looked around.

“The house Naomi sleeps behind?”

Kendra stood abruptly.

“Oh, here we go.”

I ignored her.

Mom’s voice hardened.

“She chose that arrangement.”

“No, she didn’t.”

“You don’t know what happened while you were away.”

“I know more than you think.”

Kendra slammed her palm on the table.

“Naomi has been poisoning you against us since you got back!”

That was when I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because after five days of pretending, I was finally finished.

“I haven’t needed Naomi to tell me much.”

I placed my phone on the table.

Then I slid a thick envelope from my jacket.

Bank records.

Property documents.

Credit-card applications.

Medical bills.

Copies of signatures.

The color drained from Mom’s face.

I turned to Kendra.

“That truck outside?”

She said nothing.

“Twenty-seven thousand dollars from one of the accounts receiving my deployment pay.”

I turned back to Mom.
