“My best friend for 37 years asked me to take one last photo together during our vacation… as friends. When I asked him why he was saying “last,” he smiled and replied, “Because tomorrow you will find out who I really am…”
She reached into her purse with deliberate slowness and pulled out a familiar silver key that she had carried for over a decade. It was the spare key to my front door that Michael had given her years ago.
“You are going to need this door unlocked before the mail arrives tomorrow,” Susan whispered softly. Her voice lacked any warmth or familiarity, sounding more like a stranger standing in my doorway.
I unlocked the wooden door and stepped inside the quiet, empty hallway that still smelled faintly of Michael’s cologne. Susan walked past me without taking off her shoes and placed a thick manila envelope right on the kitchen table.
She turned around slowly to face me with a look of cold, calculated detachment in her eyes. “Everything you think you know about your marriage, your husband, and your life is a complete lie.”
Panic surged through my chest as I took a step backward toward the living room rug. I demanded to know what she was talking about and why she was trying to torment me.
Susan pointed a steady finger directly at the manila envelope resting on the polished wooden counter. “Open that document inside the folder and read every single page before the sun goes down.”
Before I could process her bizarre demand or call for help, she turned sharply and walked right out the front door. I heard her car engine roar to life in the driveway and speed away down the quiet suburban street.
