“My best friend for 37 years asked me to take one last photo together during our vacation… as friends. When I asked him why he was saying “last,” he smiled and replied, “Because tomorrow you will find out who I really am…”

My hands shook violently as I walked over to the kitchen table and picked up the heavy brown envelope. I untied the string closure and pulled out a stack of official paperwork, financial statements, and printed emails.

The very first document was a comprehensive car insurance policy document detailing a multi-vehicle accident from three years prior. My eyes scanned the page quickly until I spotted Michael’s signature at the very bottom of the liability form.

Attached to the insurance paperwork was a detailed settlement report issued by a prominent car accident and injury lawyers firm downtown. The file outlined a massive financial payout intended for a mysterious third party involved in a severe highway collision.

According to the legal documents, the accident had occurred late at night while I was away visiting my elderly mother in another state. Michael had claimed he was driving alone when his vehicle collided with another car on the dark interstate highway.

However, the police accident report told a completely different story that was carefully hidden from public record. There was a passenger in Michael’s car that night, and her identity was explicitly listed in the official police addendum.

My breath hitched in my throat as I read the name printed neatly next to the passenger injury claim details. The injured passenger who received the confidential settlement funds was none other than Susan herself.
