MY EX REFUSED TO HELP OUR SICK NEWBORN — “SHE’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND YOUR PROBLEM
“He did this while I was writing his mortgage checks,” she said quietly, holding my daughter in her pajamas at midnight. “He called my granddaughter a brat and shut a door on her breathing treatments, in a house I pay for, with money I earned protecting this family.
No.
That’s not what my money is for.
And it’s certainly not what my son is going to keep being.”
The “plan” she described that night made me laugh and cry at once, because it started with something small and petty and satisfying — the thing we’d place at his door at dawn.
But the real plan was much bigger, and entirely, beautifully legal.
Barbara was going to stop funding the life Eric used to humiliate us.
And she was going to make very sure her granddaughter was taken care of instead.
PART 3
What we placed at Eric’s door at dawn was, I’ll admit, the pettiest and most satisfying part, and Barbara’s idea entirely.
It was a moving box. A single cardboard moving box, taped shut, sitting on his welcome mat. On the side, in Barbara’s neat handwriting, it said: “START PACKING.”
And taped to the top was a letter, on her lawyer’s letterhead, formally giving Eric thirty days to vacate the house — her house — that she had let him live in rent-free for years, and which she was now reclaiming.
