The call should have ended after Patricia reminded me to bring an apple cake to Sunday dinner, because that was the only reason she had called—or at least, it was the only reason she wanted me to know about.

“Use the dark cinnamon this time,” my mother-in-law said. “The lighter kind barely has any flavor.”

“I’ll remember.”

“And no walnuts. Richard still insists they upset his stomach.”

“I know, Patricia.”

She paused, and I could picture her standing in the immaculate white kitchen of her home in Westmere, inspecting the conversation with the same critical expression she used when inspecting my clothes, my parenting, or the way I arranged flowers on a dining table.

“You’re a good daughter-in-law, Emily,” she said at last.

The compliment sounded so unusually sincere that I almost laughed.

“I’ll see you Sunday.”

“Yes, darling. Goodbye.”

“Goodbye.”
