My Mother-In-Law Forgot To Hang Up After Our Phone Call — What I Heard Next Changed My Life Forever
I placed my phone beside the cutting board and returned to preparing dinner.
My husband, Nathan, was upstairs taking a shower after what he described as another exhausting day at his law firm, while our eight-year-old daughter, Sophie, sat at the kitchen table working on a school project about family trees. Colored pencils covered the table, and she had already drawn herself with hair twice as long as it really was.
For several seconds, our home in the fictional city of Bellwynn felt exactly as it always did: warm, busy, and safe.
Then Patricia’s voice came through my phone again.
“She’s still bringing the cake.”
I looked toward the screen.
The call had not ended.
Before I could disconnect it, a man answered from somewhere inside Patricia’s house.
I recognized Nathan’s older brother, Thomas.
“You can’t keep inviting Emily here and pretending nothing is happening,” he said.
My hand stopped above the phone.
Patricia lowered her voice, but not enough.
“We only need to keep everything normal until Nathan is ready.”
“Ready to do what?”
“You know exactly what.”
Thomas sighed.
“He has a wife and a daughter.”
“And he had a life before Emily.”
A cold sensation moved down my back.
I knew I should hang up.
Listening was wrong, even if they were clearly discussing me, but my fingers would not move.
