The agent introduced herself as Special Agent Miller as she stepped toward the metal door of Unit 17, ignoring my vibrating phone entirely.

My hands shook as I slotted the brass key into the heavy padlock, turning it with a loud, echoey click that made my heart leap into my throat.

The metal door rolled upward with a deafening screech, revealing a room illuminated only by the faint blue glow of computer monitors and tracking gear.

In the center of the concrete floor rested a secure metallic briefcase, its digital timer blinking green numbers beside a small radio transmitter.

“Your father wasn’t just an accountant, Julian,” Agent Miller whispered, gesturing toward the surrounding pin-boards covered in photos, bank slips, and wire transfer logs.

“He was an undercover asset working with us to expose a federal money laundering ring that goes straight to the highest levels of local law enforcement,” she explained.

My mind reeled as I recognized familiar names on the board, including the city’s lead prosecutor and my own mother’s wealthy family members.
