Agent Miller opened the briefcase, revealing thick files containing hard evidence that my mother had been directing the illegal operations for decades.

“Raymond realized three weeks ago that your mother discovered he was cooperating with federal authorities,” Agent Miller revealed softly, looking at me with deep sympathy.
“He knew if he didn’t fake his death, she would eliminate him and frame you to take the fall for the missing offshore accounts,” she added.
My phone rang again, the screen lighting up with a video call request from my mother’s personal number that I was terrified to answer.

Agent Miller signaled for me to accept the call while standing out of the camera’s view, motioning for me to keep my composure.
My mother’s face appeared on the screen, sitting in our dimly lit family living room, but her eyes held a cold, ruthless glare I had never seen in my life.
“I see you didn’t come straight home, Julian,” she said, her voice completely devoid of the motherly warmth she had displayed at the cemetery.
