Michael Hoskin Stayed Beside Her
Michael Hoskin knew Pitt long before she became internationally known.
The pair had known each other since their school years and became a couple several years later. In a 2019 ABC interview, Hoskin recalled Pitt as energetic, happy and someone whose company he immediately enjoyed.
Their relationship was already established when the 2011 fire occurred.
Then their roles changed almost instantly.
They were no longer simply a young couple building a future together. Their lives became structured around hospitals, operations, rehabilitation and uncertainty.
Hoskin, who had worked as a police officer, left that job and became deeply involved in Pitt’s care.
ABC later described how he left his policing career to care for her as the couple attempted to rebuild their lives together.
The romantic version of this story is easy to tell: a man stays beside the woman he loves after a catastrophic accident.
The reality was considerably more complicated.
Severe burn recovery can involve repeated operations, painful wound care, rehabilitation, reconstructive procedures and long-term adjustments to changes in mobility and physical function. For Pitt, it also meant confronting the loss of fingers and adapting to a body dramatically altered by injury.
For Hoskin, it meant watching someone he loved endure circumstances neither of them could have anticipated.
Their relationship moved through roles that most young couples never expect to experience.
Years later, Pitt described those transitions plainly: they had gone from boyfriend and girlfriend to patient and carer, and eventually to parents.
She has also credited Michael with helping her through some of her darkest periods.
