When my father died, my sister kicked me out of the house – she didn’t know he had made all the necessary arrangements to protect me.
Losing a parent is painful enough, but when old family resentments resurface, grief can turn into a nightmare. My story began with a brutal eviction and ended with a life lesson I will never forget.
I grew up between my father and my older sister, Charlotte. Yet, a gulf always separated us. She lived her life, free and carefree, while I remained faithfully by our father’s side. Until the day everything changed.
The revelation of the will
Two weeks after the funeral, we met at the notary’s office for the reading of our father’s last will and testament. I thought he would divide the house between the two of us. But no: he bequeathed it entirely to Charlotte. I only received an old watch. Holding it in my hands, I almost cried. It wasn’t a valuable object, but it was a piece of him.

Eviction without warning
For a few days, we lived under the same roof. Then, one evening, when I came home from work, I was greeted by a chilling announcement from Charlotte: “That’s it, our paths diverge here. You have to leave.” My belongings? Already packed and piled up in front of the door. I was in shock. Where could I go? I was young, had no savings, and was lost. Desperate, I called our notary, Mathieu, for advice.
The secret my father had hidden
The next morning, exhausted, I went to Mathieu’s. His smile said it all. He placed a file in front of me and began to speak: “Your father was a man of foresight, Dawn. He knew Charlotte would kick you out as soon as she got the house.” I shuddered. He knew? Mathieu opened the file and revealed an incredible secret: my father had inherited a colossal sum seven years earlier, nearly two million euros. He had divided this money in two… but under specific conditions.

A trap set for Charlotte
For Charlotte to receive her share, she had to share the house with me. But since she had kicked me out, she wouldn’t get anything. Mathieu then handed me a letter from my father: “Dawn, my darling, I know Charlotte. I know what she’ll do. But you’re much smarter than her. You always have been. The money is in a safe. Use it wisely. I love you more than anything. Dad.” I scanned the bank details, but one problem remained: I didn’t know the safe’s combination.
