I had been a single mother for four years when I met Brandon. Lisa’s biological father hadn’t disappeared after some dramatic fight. He simply became less present. Visits turned into cancellations, calls went unanswered, and eventually I stopped promising my daughter that he’d come back when I no longer knew whether that was true.
Brandon entered her life carefully. He never demanded that she call him Dad or tried to replace someone she’d lost. He just showed up. He rebuilt Lego castles, remembered which cereal she liked and spent an afternoon teaching her to ride a bicycle. By the time he proposed to me, the two of them had their own jokes and routines. When Lisa overheard the proposal and asked, “Does this mean I get a dad too?” Brandon opened his arms and told her, “If you’ll have me.”
His mother, Barbara, never accepted that as easily.
She was polite to Lisa when Brandon was around, but her comments to me were different. She’d tell me how “generous” Brandon was for taking responsibility for another man’s child. Once she asked whether I expected him to pay for Lisa’s college because, in her words, “Brandon will eventually have children of his own.”
I told Brandon about those remarks.
He didn’t agree with his mother, but he minimized them.
“She’ll adjust.”
