My Future MIL Sewed Tiny Suitcases All over My Wedding Train Because I Already Had a 7-Year-Old Daughter – When My Fiancé Saw It, What He Did Made the Entire Room Go Silent
“Only where you told me to.”
He opened the bag and moved aside a stuffed rabbit and some clothes.
Then he pulled out a handmade picture frame.
It was bright blue cardboard covered with gold glitter and crooked plastic jewels. Inside was a photograph of Brandon and Lisa at one of her soccer games.
Across the top, she’d written:
MY NEW DAD & ME.
Lisa looked embarrassed.
“It was supposed to be your present.”
Brandon stared at it for a moment.
Then he knelt in front of her.
“Do you remember what you asked me when I proposed to your mom?”
She nodded.
“If I got a dad too.”
“And what did I say?”
“If you’ll have me.”
“Right.”
He held up the frame.
“I meant it.”
Lisa started crying.
Then, very quietly, she said, “Grandma Barbara doesn’t.”
Brandon looked at her.
“What?”
Lisa hesitated.
I could see Barbara stiffen.
“She told me I’m not really your daughter.”
The room went silent again.
“Lisa,” Barbara interrupted, “that isn’t what I—”
Brandon raised his hand.
“Mom. Stop.”
Then he looked back at Lisa.
“What exactly did she say?”
Lisa wiped her face.
“She said when you and Mom have a baby, that’ll be her real grandchild because it’ll really be yours.”
Brandon’s expression changed.
He looked at his mother.
“Did you say that to her?”
Barbara tried to soften it.
“I explained that there is a biological difference. That’s simply reality.”
“To a seven-year-old?”
