I Survived the River Crash Only to Discover My Husband’s Betrayal and My Brother’s Dark Secret

Fleeing Into the Dark

“Run, Elena! The door won’t hold!” Noah shouted, his voice cracking through the rain‑splattered pine.

I lunged for the cabin’s back wall, slipping on the slick bark, the metal door shuddering as the men in black smashed it open.

Gunshots cracked in the distance, a dull thud echoing off the old mill’s stone.

“No—go! I’ll hold them off!” he yelled, ducking behind a fallen log.

I didn’t wait. I sprinted toward the faint glow of the abandoned ranger station I’d passed earlier, its roof half collapsed, windows boarded with rusted metal.

Inside, the air was stale, smelling of mildew and old pine sap. I slammed the door shut, pressing my back against the warped wood as a cold shiver ran down my spine.

My breath came in ragged bursts; the rain hammered the roof like a drum. I could hear the men’s boots thudding through the underbrush, their flashlights sweeping the trees.

“Elena, you okay?” a voice whispered from the shadows.

I turned, heart pounding, to see a broken wooden chair and a battered radio blinking static. I pressed my ear to the speaker, hoping for a signal, but only the sound of my own heartbeat returned.

Outside, Noah’s silhouette vanished among the trees, a flash of steel catching the moonlight.

He had taken the gun, the flash drive, and his resolve.

“I’m coming,” I muttered, gripping the cold metal of the desk drawer, ready to defend my only refuge.
