My Father Stopped Speaking to Me After I Left Medical School to Care for My Sick Boyfriend – 5 Years Later, He Came to Take Me Home, but When He Entered Our Apartment, He Froze and Said, ‘This Can’t Be Real!’

His eyes moved around the apartment again.

“What kind of work?”

Elliot handed me my coffee.

“Saturday,” he said.

Dad frowned.

“What happens Saturday?”

I closed the bag.

“You came here because you wanted to see what I threw my life away for.”

I picked it up.

“Come with me.”

Dad barely spoke during the drive.

Silence had always been one of his favorite ways to show disappointment.

But when I was little, those silences never lasted long.

My mother died when I was two.

I barely remembered her.

What I remembered was Dad becoming everything.

He packed lunches.

Failed miserably at braiding my hair.

Helped with school projects.

Sat beside me when I was sick.

Answered every science question I asked.

Medicine was everywhere in our family.

Grandpa had been a doctor.

Dad became one too.

By the time I was nine, I knew the difference between a tendon and a ligament because Dad refused to give me simplified answers just because I was a child.

And I loved medicine.

That mattered.

Nobody pushed me into medical school.

I wanted it.

When my acceptance letter arrived, Dad disappeared into his bedroom and returned holding Grandpa’s medical bag.

“Three generations,” he said.

I had never seen him look prouder.

Then I met Elliot.

Two years later, Elliot became seriously ill.

At first, everyone expected treatment to be manageable.

It wasn’t.

His condition worsened.

Some days he couldn’t shower safely.

Some days getting from the bedroom to the bathroom required help.

He had no close family nearby.

So I became everything.

Student.

Partner.
